The storyline behind Foster the People‘s latest video “Houdini” witnesses the band’s accidental death while filming a music video. Rather than cancel the already scheduled shoot and live performance, the video’s financier finds a way to save the day.
While the crew is frozen in disbelief, the man calls in a team of engineers to replace the group’s internal organs with animatronics. Then, with the help of a troupe of puppeteers, Foster the People are brought to life and the audience is fooled.
Today, VEVO released an exclusive behind-the-scenes short about the making of “Houdini” and the band and directors fill fans in on what went on during the shoot.
While the start of the video showcases Foster the People learning dance moves for “Houdini,” bassist Cubbie Fink admits it took a lot longer than expected.
“A couple of days of rehearsal for the dance definitely paid off,” he said. “I feel like this first pass we made at it went really well. We all felt pretty locked in. It’s pretty wild because pretty much everything we’re doing we have a puppeteer behind us.”
Meanwhile, it was revealed that the drum kit actually exploded during the shoot, having drummer Mark Pontius remark “it’s surreal.”
Director Daniel Kwan further explained that he had a blast talking with the band about the video concept.
“I think one of the best parts about this video is the fact that the band is so gung ho about dying,” he said. “When we first met with the band they actually were brainstorming all the different ways they could die. It was really fun. It was a bummer they could only die once.”
Foster the People are currently playing select U.S. dates followed by a handful of European summer festivals.
